Tech: Proposed Law Blocks Export Of America’s Least Threatening Gun

Designed by Defense Distributed, the 3D printed Liberator pistol is both a revolutionary concept and a profoundly mediocre gun. The Liberator is the world's first successful 3D printed gun, capable of firing a single bullet, with only a modest risk of exploding in the hand of the shooter. Shortly after it’s creation, the State Department moved to block the group sharing the file online. Now, a proposed rule change to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations could keep all files for 3D printed guns offline.

The change in question is to the definition of “technical data,” and it is, unsurprisingly, quite a technical paragraph. From the proposed rules:

Video: Google Translate Adds 20 Languages To Augmented Reality App

Google, the company that ferries you to the internet and might soon ferry you to work, has expanded its toolbox of internet gadgets, adding new functionality to their Translate app: real-time text translation of 20 new languages via the camera. It’s another step towards either true augmented reality or John Carpenter’s They Live, but no matter what it’s very cool.

The ever-hip programmers at Google even put together a little video, translating 1958 hit single La Bamba. The video showcases the app’s versatility: the camera instantly translates languages like Bulgarian, Catalan, and Filipino to and from English.

The app is available for Android and iOS for free.

Tech: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Drugs Better and Faster

When researchers used to try to diagnose and treat diseases, they would often search for one mutation on a single gene that was causing the problem. Or maybe they would look for average effects of a mutation that led to a disease across the entire population. But these approaches ignored the complexities and specifics that truly give rise to disease — demographic information, proteins, multi-gene interactions, environmental effects, and a whole host of other facets.

Video: Facebook Finally Reveals Its Own Internet Drone, And It’s Huge

While Project Loon found an initial home in Sri Lanka, Facebook has its own update for its plan to provide wireless internet from the skies.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the completion of Aquila, Facebook’s first full-scale aircraft designed to deliver wireless internet with lasers, as a part of their project with Internet.org. Aquila is solar-powered, weighs “less than a car,” and has the wingspan of a Boeing 737, according to the Facebook post. Mock-ups we’ve seen in the past make it look like a giant boomerang, but the full design resembles more of a slimmed down B-2 stealth bomber. "Aquila" is also a constellation, named after the bird that carried Zeus' thunderbolts to battle in Greco-Roman mythology.

Scientists Want To Use Drones To Capture Whale Snot

Whales are awesome and important. But because they are so big and sensitive to sound, researchers have a hard time collecting all the data they need without freaking them out. Now, whale biologists from the nonprofit Ocean Alliance have teamed up with students from the Olin College of Engineering to create drones that can capture one of the most important biological materials--a whale’s snot--without disturbing the animals. They’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund their research.

Whale “blow” is the combination of mucus, or snot, water, and tissue that may sound very gross, but is essential for whale biologists--from it, they can tell if the whales are stressed or pregnant based on their hormones, check their snot to see if they are infected with any viruses, or gather tissue samples for DNA analysis.

Breaking News: Twitter Turns Down The CRISPR Hype

The gene editing technique CRISPR was launched from relative public obscurity to the mainstream today when #CRISPRfacts began trending on Twitter, quieting some of the hype surrounding a Wired story.

CRISPR does hold a lot of promise. Unlike previous gene editing techniques, the CRISPR-Cas9 system is so specific that it can quickly and cheaply change individual base pairs of DNA. It might one day remove antibiotic resistance genes from bacteria or help to clone woolly mammoths in elephant cells, but it likely won't be accomplishing anything quite so revolutionary anytime soon.

Facebook Loses Appeal on New York Search Warrants

A New York state appeals court ruled on Tuesday that Facebook had no legal standing to challenge search warrants on behalf of its customers, a decision that dealt a blow to civil libertarians and social media companies seeking to expand Internet privacy.

Upholding a lower court decision, the five-judge panel in Manhattan said that under state and federal law only a defendant can challenge a search warrant, and it must be done during a hearing before trial. At that point, defendants can move to have evidence thrown out as the fruit of an illegal search.

The Flash-bashing picked up last week after revelations that the spyware giant known as the Hacking Team had been using Flash to remotely take over people's computers and infect them with malware. (That discovery took place after the Hacking Team was itself hacked. Documents revealed in the breach showed that the Hacking Team exploited two critical vulnerabilities in Flash's code.)

Compute & Cloud

Creating an agile data center through a pragmatic approach

IT needs to be faster and more agile to meet the levels of service today’s end-users demand. As customers invest in next-generation technology platforms for hybrid cloud, converged infrastructure or VDI, they’re faced with complicated choices.

Food Technology for All

We may be heading toward a new food economy that’s more competitive and innovative.

For years, the most important food technologies were all about scale. How could we feed a fast-growing population at less expense? By doing everything bigger: food grown on bigger farms was sold by ever-merging global food giants to grocery chains of superstore proportions.

Many of today’s food technologies seem to be moving in the opposite direction, toward methods and products that are economical for small farms as well as large corporate ones. This does not mean an end to big food: with the planet’s population projected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050, agriculture and food production will still have to achieve a massive scale, with help from technology and innovative research. Still, evolving technologies, including inexpensive sensors, mobile devices, and data analysis, have helped an increasing variety of food companies, retailers, and producers lower their costs and compete in many specialty markets.
This could be the start of a new food economy—one that reflects more competition and more innovation, provides opportunity for a broader group of investors, and is more dynamic and responsive than the industrial model that has dominated for decades.
