Tech: Proposed Law Blocks Export Of America’s Least Threatening Gun

Designed by Defense Distributed, the 3D printed Liberator pistol is both a revolutionary concept and a profoundly mediocre gun. The Liberator is the world's first successful 3D printed gun, capable of firing a single bullet, with only a modest risk of exploding in the hand of the shooter. Shortly after it’s creation, the State Department moved to block the group sharing the file online. Now, a proposed rule change to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations could keep all files for 3D printed guns offline.

The change in question is to the definition of “technical data,” and it is, unsurprisingly, quite a technical paragraph. From the proposed rules:

Video: Google Translate Adds 20 Languages To Augmented Reality App

Google, the company that ferries you to the internet and might soon ferry you to work, has expanded its toolbox of internet gadgets, adding new functionality to their Translate app: real-time text translation of 20 new languages via the camera. It’s another step towards either true augmented reality or John Carpenter’s They Live, but no matter what it’s very cool.

The ever-hip programmers at Google even put together a little video, translating 1958 hit single La Bamba. The video showcases the app’s versatility: the camera instantly translates languages like Bulgarian, Catalan, and Filipino to and from English.

The app is available for Android and iOS for free.

Tech: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Drugs Better and Faster

When researchers used to try to diagnose and treat diseases, they would often search for one mutation on a single gene that was causing the problem. Or maybe they would look for average effects of a mutation that led to a disease across the entire population. But these approaches ignored the complexities and specifics that truly give rise to disease — demographic information, proteins, multi-gene interactions, environmental effects, and a whole host of other facets.

Video: Facebook Finally Reveals Its Own Internet Drone, And It’s Huge

While Project Loon found an initial home in Sri Lanka, Facebook has its own update for its plan to provide wireless internet from the skies.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the completion of Aquila, Facebook’s first full-scale aircraft designed to deliver wireless internet with lasers, as a part of their project with Internet.org. Aquila is solar-powered, weighs “less than a car,” and has the wingspan of a Boeing 737, according to the Facebook post. Mock-ups we’ve seen in the past make it look like a giant boomerang, but the full design resembles more of a slimmed down B-2 stealth bomber. "Aquila" is also a constellation, named after the bird that carried Zeus' thunderbolts to battle in Greco-Roman mythology.

Tech: Google's Balloons Will Provide An Entire Country With Wi-Fi

Google’s plan to bring internet to the world via balloon has found a toehold in central Asia. The government of Sri Lanka announced this week that Google’s Project Loon will provide "affordable high-speed" internet coverage for the entire country, beamed from balloons floating in the atmosphere.
