On 2 June 1978, Santiago Bernabéu died in Madrid aged 82. During his time in office as president, Real Madrid grew a lot in terms of both sport and as an institution. The greatest successes came in La Liga and the European Cup, a competition he helped to start up. As well as being a president, Santiago Bernabéu was also a player, coach and director at the club.

Born in Almansa (Albacete) on 8 June 1895, he took up the Real Madrid presidency in 1943. Among his big initiatives was the construction of the Nuevo Chamartín, opened in 1947 and renamed in his honour years later. On a sporting level, the football and basketball teams both became the best sides in the world.
