Zico: Messi deserves to win The Goal 50 ahead of Ronaldo

Brazil legend Zico believes that Lionel Messi deserves to win this year's Goal 50, arguing that the Barcelona ace has usurped Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player in the world.

Ronaldo scored a personal-best 61 goals in just 54 games in all competitions last season, while he became Real Madrid's all-time record scorer last month.

However, Zico feels that Messi should be recognised for inspiring Barcelona's treble triumph in 2014-15, as well as leading Argentina to the final of this year's Copa America.

"I could have chosen Cristiano as well as Neymar," the Selecao icon told Goal. "For me, the three of them are in the top bracket and they can change a match individually.

Ozil: The best playmaker in the world?

“If you love to watch football, you love to watch Mesut Ozil.”

That is Arsene Wenger’s mantra when asked about Arsenal’s most expensive ever signing, and with every passing week Ozil puts forward the case that he is the best playmaker in the world.

The German produced another masterclass in the 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night that keeps alive Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League for a 16th season in a row.

Much of the talk this season has centred around the importance of Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal’s hopes in the Premier League and Champions League, but it is Ozil who has been their main man.

He scored the opener here with a flying header and, even though Alexis added the Gunners’ second and third with close-range finishes, it is Ozil who represents Arsenal’s best chance of escaping from their Champions League group when they travel to Olympiacos on December 9.

Real Madrid fans boo Ronaldo

Real Madrid fans have vented their anger at Cristiano Ronaldo after watching their side sink to a crushing 4-0 defeat by Barcelona on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo was powerless to prevent Luis Enrique’s side moving six points clear at the top of La Liga thanks to a double from Luis Suarez and goals from Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

The white handkerchiefs were out in force at the final whistle with Rafa Benitez now under increasing pressure having been forced to deny rumours of a rift between himself and key players including Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez in the build-up to his first Clasico as Real Madrid coach.

Benitez accepts blame for Barcelona mauling: I chose the wrong XI

Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez has accepted the blame for his side's 4-0 humbling at the hands of Barcelona, insisting that he selected the wrong starting XI for the match.

Two goals from Luis Suarez and one each for Neymar and Andres Iniesta ensured the Catalans claimed a valuable three points to move six points clear of their fierce rivals at the top of the Liga table.

And while Benitez is adamant that the entire team must be held responsible for their collapse against Luis Enrique's side, he has revealed that he selected the wrong XI for the match.

'Abramovich knows Mourinho is the right man for Chelsea'

Chelsea’s technical director Michael Emenalo insists Jose Mourinho has the full backing from Roman Abramovich.

The Premier League champions currently sit 16th in the Premier League having suffered seven defeats in their opening 12 games.

Mourinho has already been given the public support by Chelsea but Emenalo, who is one of Abramovich’s closest allies at Stamford Bridge, insists the Russian billionaire “has the whole picture” of the current situation at the club.

“When it comes to decisions, we feel confident we have an owner who has a very good track record, who is astute at making decisions of this kind at the right time to get us to where we want to be,” Emenalo said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

Real Madrid's problems are exaggerated - Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique believes Real Madrid's problems have been exaggerated and insists Saturday's Clasico will not prove decisive in the race for the league title.

Barcelona head to the Santiago Bernabeu with a three-point advantage at the top of the table and with Madrid reportedly in disarray amid speculation senior players are disgruntled with the tactics employed by new boss Rafa Benitez.

But Luis Enrique, who played for both clubs, says suggestions Barcelona can move in to an unassailable lead by beating their rivals are over the top.

Luis Enrique: Messi won't be 100% for Clasico

Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique has confirmed Lionel Messi is available for Saturday’s Clasico, but stressed he will not be “100 per cent fit” for the trip to Real Madrid.

Enrique wouldn’t be drawn on whether or not Messi will start the match at the Bernabeu, though, saying he will make a decision on his line-up as close to kick off as possible.

The Argentina international has been missing since the end of September when he injured ligaments in his knee against Las Palmas.

However, he has returned to training this week and could feature in this weekend’s top of La Liga clash.

“With respect to Leo, he’s back with the squad and the feelings are positive,” the Barca boss told a press conference.

Raul ponders coaching and Madrid as 'new path begins'

A legendary career littered with milestones, records and trophies finished with another piece of silverware.

Spanish legend Raul helped the New York Cosmos win the 2015 NASL Championship on Sunday night, as they defeated a 10-man Ottawa Fury FC, 3-2, at James M. Shuart Stadium.

It was Raul's final game as a professional footballer. What the 38-year-old does next is unknown. The striker plans to stay involved in the game, but has not yet decided how. He will take the next few weeks and months to figure it all out while living in New York and enjoying his new life with his family.

Eventually returning Real Madrid would make sense, but it is still to be determined whether he goes back there whenever he is ready to embark on the next phase of his career.

Mata backs Costa to start scoring for Chelsea

The former Blues playmaker says he wants his compatriot to refind his form, while Atletico Madrid's Koke has also leant his support to his struggling former teammate

Manchester United star Juan Mata has backed international teammate Diego Costa to regain top form for club and country ahead of Spain's friendly against England on Friday.

Costa has struggled to replicate the form of his first season at Chelsea, with just three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions this term.

His struggles mirror those of his club, currently 16th in the Premier League table.

Argentina doctor - Messi shouldn't risk himself in the Clasico

Argentina team doctor Homero de Agostino says the 28-year-old should sit out Barcelona's clash against Real Madrid next weekend

Barcelona star Lionel Messi risks another spell on the sidelines if he plays in the Clasico against Real Madrid, Argentina's team doctor has warned.

The Argentina international has been sidelined since sustaining knee ligament damage in the La Liga match against Las Palmas on September 26.

There were hopes Messi would be fit for the November 21 clash against fierce rivals Real at Santiago Bernabeu - but Argentina's team doctor, Homero de Agostino, says there's a chance Messi could face an even longer spell out if he plays.

Benzema 'blackmail' phone call leaked

An alleged copy of a telephone call involving Karim Benzema has been released, in which the Real Madrid striker reportedly tells Mathieu Valbuena "if you want the sex tape to be destroyed, come see my friend in Lyon".

Benzema was charged by a court in Versailles last week with complicity in an attempt to blackmail and participating in a criminal conspiracy, as part of an investigation into an alleged plot to extort money from Lyon midfielder Valbuena.

The case is ongoing - Valbuena is yet to speak to investigators - while Benzema's agent, Sylvain Cormier, has protested his client's innocence and said the France striker is "absolutely calm and beyond reproach".

Tech: Sepsis Detector Shrinks the Diagnosis from Days to Hours

Hospitals are beginning to use a new, more potent weapon against sepsis, the devastating condition that kills more than 25 percent of its victims and costs hospitals billions of dollars annually. In the U.S. alone, more than a million people become infected each year, and it contributes to as many half of all deaths in hospitals.

Last fall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the new technology, developed by T2 Biosystems, for diagnosing sepsis caused by a fungus called Candida. Several hospitals have begun deploying T2’s Candida-detection system, which is based on the same physical principle behind magnetic resonance imaging. By the end of this year the company aims to have 30 hospitals signed on to purchase and use the technology.

Sepsis is a destructive reaction to an infection marked by an overwhelming inflammatory response throughout the body. If left untreated, sepsis can cause organ malfunction and death. Treating a septic patient requires pinpointing the bacterial or fungal organism that is the root cause. Today that process takes at least a day, and can take up to five days, as the patient’s condition worsens. T2 Biosystems says its novel pathogen detector, called T2 Magnetic Resonance (T2MR), can identify the bug within five hours.

Doctors typically give a septic patient an immediate dose of a so-called broad-spectrum antibiotic that kills a variety of different bacteria, and then try to figure out the specific bug at fault by drawing blood and performing a lab test called a blood culture. At that point it is a race against the unidentified pathogen, and the blood culture step, which often doesn’t work, simply takes too long, says T2 Biosystems CEO John McDonough. McDonough cites clinical data that implies that if patients can get the right drug within 12 hours of first showing symptoms, the chance of death can be cut in half. “Every hour of delayed therapy increases mortality by 7 to 8 percent,” he says.

Broad-spectrum antibiotics often don’t work, and are useless against fungal sepsis, which is even more deadly than bacterial sepsis. Candida infections in the bloodstream kill some 40 percent of patients.

“We have the only technology we’re aware of that can go directly from a blood sample to a species-specific diagnostic test result,” says McDonough. It’s also more accurate than a blood culture. In a recent head-to-head comparison involving 55 patients known to have Candida infections, T2MR detected the pathogen in 96 percent of the patients, whereas blood culture detected it in only 60 percent.

The T2MR detector works by measuring changes in the magnetic properties of the water molecules in the sample. After some processing steps, magnetic nanoparticles, equipped on their surface with strands of DNA complementary to strands in the target pathogen, are mixed with the sample. If a given target is present, the particles will attach to it and cluster, causing changes in the magnetic properties of the water molecules in the sample. Applying magnetic pulses elicits a response from those molecules, called T2 relaxation, and by measuring the change in this signal, the device automatically determines whether or not a given bug is present.

Six hospitals have begun using the Candida diagnostic test, and 13 more have signed contracts to adopt the technology. Next in the pipeline is a bacteria detector aimed at the bugs not covered by broad-spectrum antibiotics. The company expects to begin testing the bacteria detector in clinical trials by the end of this year. If it can get FDA-approval for this test as quickly as it did for the Candida test, the bacteria diagnostic could be in the market as early as 2017.

Ramos hits out at Real Madrid’s medical department

Chief doctor Jesus Olmo has been criticised for his handling of injuries to the squad and the Spain defender admits the players have no confidence in him

Madrid have been hit with several injuries to key players this season including James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Pepe, Dani Carvajal and Mateo Kovacic, while Ramos has required pain-killing injections to play through a shoulder problem.

Real Madrid fans want Messi

It has been known for players from Barcelona to cross the Clasico divide and head to Real Madrid.

Luis Figo was one who completed the ultimate act of treachery by signing terms at the Santiago Bernabeu, but during Real's 3-2 defeat to Sevilla on Sunday, one Blancos support took things to another extreme...

...brandishing a shirt with Lionel Messi's name and number on the back.

Messi has spent his whole footballing career at the Camp Nou and, while Barca fans were angry enough to throw a pig's head at Luis Figo upon his return in a Clasico, what would come the Argentine's way?!

James Rodriguez: We can't fear Barcelona, we're Real Madrid

James Rodriguez insists Real Madrid must put aside their recent 3-2 defeat to Sevilla when facing Barcelona in El Clasico in a fortnight, stating his side have nothing to fear.

Los Blancos saw their unbeaten start to life under Rafael Benitez ended on Sunday at Ramon Sanchez Pijuan, allowing Barcelona to go three points clear at the top of La Liga following their 3-0 win over Villarreal earlier.

However, James - who celebrated his comeback from a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a goal against Sevilla - states his side must simply focus on stating united and bouncing back with victory in the Clasico.

"It's easy to name names now, but when the team wins, we do it together, and when we lose, we also lose together," he told reporters after the match. "We'll have to see what happens and be ready for our next match.

Tech: Meet the man who builds houses with water

Hungarian architect Matyas Gutai believes that water is the perfect material for keeping a house at a comfortable temperature.

And while that doesn't mean that he can do away with traditional materials like bricks, cement, and plaster, his system promotes a whole new idea of engineering.

Gutai built a prototype house in his hometown of Kecskemet, south of Budapest, with his high school friend Milan Berenyi, after years of research and development.
The house was built with a grant from the EU, and showcases the "liquid engineering" concepts Gutai has written about extensively.

Tech: Robot Toddler Learns to Stand

Like many toddlers, Darwin sometimes looks a bit unsteady on its feet. But with each clumsy motion, the humanoid robot is demonstrating an important new way for androids to deal with challenging or unfamiliar environments. The robot learns to perform a new task by using a process somewhat similar to the neurological processes that underpin childhood learning.

Darwin lives in the lab of Pieter Abbeel, an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley. When I saw the robot a few weeks ago, it was suspended from a camera tripod by a piece of rope, looking a bit tragic. A little while earlier, Darwin had been wriggling around on the end of the rope, trying to work out how best to move its limbs in order to stand up without falling over.

Tech: New Wearable Device Can Measure Your Blood Flow

How much blood is running through your veins, arteries, and capillaries? To find out, you’d typically need to be motionless. Now a new wearable device may soon be able to give you that information even while you’re moving around, doing normal activities. The flexible patch, which conforms to the skin and uses tiny heat sensors to precisely map the blood flow beneath the surface, could give doctors a high-resolution view of this important indicator of health.

The inventors of the new “epidermal electronic” sensor system say it is ready for use in a clinical setting, specifically for monitoring skin health, for example in patients who have recently had skin grafts. They say down the road it may also be possible to use it inside the body. In a recent demonstration, the researchers showed that the device can record accurate data from human subjects about the flow of blood in larger vessels, specifically veins in the forearm, as well as in the network of tiny vessels near the surface of the skin.

Compared with state-of-the-art methods for noninvasively measuring blood flow, which rely on optical systems or ultrasound technology, the new sensor is much simpler and less expensive, says John Rogers, one of the inventors and a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. More importantly, he says, it is much less sensitive to motion thanks to the way it “intimately laminates” to the skin.

I'd like to play a year in MLS - Ronaldo

The 30-year-old says he is open to playing anywhere the world, with the United States an attractive option amid reported interest from PSG and Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo admits he is "definitely thinking" about leaving Real Madrid for a year in MLS, despite his agent Jorge Mendes saying the star will end his career at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo, 30, has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and his former club, Manchester United, although Mendes said earlier on Friday that Ronaldo "will finish his career at Real Madrid, for sure."
