Brazil legend Zico believes that Lionel Messi deserves to win this year's Goal 50, arguing that the Barcelona ace has usurped Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player in the world.
Ronaldo scored a personal-best 61 goals in just 54 games in all competitions last season, while he became Real Madrid's all-time record scorer last month.
However, Zico feels that Messi should be recognised for inspiring Barcelona's treble triumph in 2014-15, as well as leading Argentina to the final of this year's Copa America.
"I could have chosen Cristiano as well as Neymar," the Selecao icon told Goal. "For me, the three of them are in the top bracket and they can change a match individually.
"If you had asked me two years back, I would have said Cristiano Ronaldo.
"But Messi helped Barcelona win the Champions League and the Spanish competitions. Messi played well in the Copa America, too."
The Goal 50 is an annual award that both recognises and ranks the world's 50 best footballers of the past 12 months.
Chief editors and correspondents from Goal's 37 editions around the world all cast their votes, with candidates judged on their level of consistency over the previous year of action, their big-game performances, footballing legacy and the success of their teams at both club and international level.
